Jewish Board Games: Apples to Apples

If you are looking for a fun gift for a Bar/Bat Mitzvah boy/girl or if you are starting to search for family Hanukkah gifts, take a look at the Jewish version of Apples to Apples! We play this game with my daughters all the time, and it just never gets old. It's wonderful because it is fun for all ages and so easy to play. The way the game works, is that a card is chosen (e.g., the card might say "delicious). Then everyone looks through their hand of cards and chooses the card that seems the most delicious (like "chicken soup", etc.). If your card is chosen as the most delicious out of all of the cards put out, then you get a point. The funny part starts when you don't really have anything delicious in your hand, so you might choose a card that says "putz" and try to convince everyone why a putz is delicious. Here are the two versions available: regular version and junior version:

I had never heard of this game, but my nieces had the 9 years and up version and it is awesome! VERY funny! Then, my husband bought the Adult version for our family and we played it Thanksgiving night... hilarious! My favorite winning round was when the category was "Unappealing", and I won by putting out a card that said "Plumber's Crack." I haven't played the Jewish version of this game, but if it's anything like the other two, then I'm sure it's an excellent gift.

Hi. As we have several relatives who don't drive on Shabbat, we are having our daughter's Bat Mitzvah luncheon at our synagogue immediately following the kiddush. As we can't have music played during the event, I am wondering if anyone has any good ideas for afternoon entertainment that might be permissable on Shabbat. Thanks! Edina

I teach confirmation class at UH in St. Louis. We play Apples to Apples on our retreats. It's a blast, AND it also starts some very interesting discussions about perspectives and values. Highly recommended.
