Create Your Own Photo Sign-in Board

At many Bar and Bat Mitzvahs, there is some type of sign-in board or book on which the guests write their good wishes. It is easy to make a photo sign-in board at your local copy center. Here are the steps:

  1. Take a high-resolution digital photo of the Bar or Bat mitzvah boy/girl. Zoom in on the image on your computer screen to make sure the image is very crisp and well exposed. If photography is not your thing, you can hire a professional photographer to take this image for you (just make sure that the photographer gives you a CD with all the original images).
  2. If desired, add the name and date of the event over the photograph using a digital imaging program like Photoshop (I used Comic Life Deluxe on my mac for this).
  3. Save the image in a high-resolution JPEG or pdf format onto a flash drive or CD. It might be best to call ahead to the copy center and ask what type of file format they prefer.
  4. Have the copy center (I used Kinko's) enlarge the image on their large-format printer to 16x20 or 24x36 or whatever size you desire.  If you plan to frame this image after the celebration, make sure you choose a size that fits into a standard frame (unless you want to pay those high custom-framing charges!).
  5. Tell the copy center to mount your image onto foam core.
  6. To display your sign-in board, you can a) stand it up on an easel; b) put it in a frame; or c) tell Kinko's that this is a board that needs to be free-standing, and they will give you self-adhesive pieces of foam core to stick on the back of your board, which will make it stand up like a picture frame.
  7. Make sure you put sharpies out for your guests to sign the board. If your image is a dark image, many people choose silver-colored sharpies so that the signatures will pop out. If you choose to frame your image for display at the party, people can sign on the frame as well.
  8. The cost of a 16x20 sign-in board is about $40 (and will go up from there depending on the size of the enlargement).

Whether it's a sign-in board or guest book, it's sure to be a treasured memory of your special day.
