How to Create Letters for a Candlelighting Board
Tuesday, August 14, 2007 at 12:17PM Here are my step-by-step instructions for creating beautiful letters to place on your candlelighting board.
1. Buy paper-mache letters. I used 8" letters from Joann's etc. They can also be purchased online from the Paper Source (click here for link). If your child has a longer name, you may want to purchase smaller lettering.
2. Poke two small holes in the base of each letter. I used a metal skewer to do this.
4. Put a glob of hot glue on the hole and quickly proceed to step 5.
5. Insert some type of 5" stick into the hole (about 2 inches inside of the letter, and about 3 inches outside of the letter). I used lollipop sticks here (I had to trim them to size), but I've used wooden skewers in the past, which can be purchased at the supermarket.
6. Stick the letters into a piece of styrofoam so that they stand upright (I used a styrofoam cooler here). Make sure the glue is REALLY dry and strong before you do this!
7. Take the letters outside and spray paint the desired color. Sometimes this requires two coats. Be careful not to use too much paint or it will create drips of paint on your letters.
8. Now comes the fun part--embellishment! You can either trace the letters onto a sheet of scrapbook paper, then cut out the shape and decoupage the paper onto the face of each letter (use Modge Podge for decoupage work). Or, just use your imagination! I used some self-adhesive glitter paper and flower embellishments for this set of letters.
And there you have it! Here is the final finished set of letters, ready to stick in the styrofoam base:
